Aviary is a limited-edition, hand-bound artist book, designed and constructed by Susan Lowdermilk with original etchings by Tallmadge Doyle.
The boxed deluxe edition consists of three books and is a variable edition containing original hand colored etchings on Magnani Incisioni Italia paper. The digital edition of Aviary is printed from one of the three deluxe edition books. It was printed on an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 on Moab Lasal Photo Matte 235 paper. A wrapper made of Stonehenge paper houses the book.
The imagery in this artist’s book juxtaposes the universal mathematical order and geometric shapes associated with the cosmos with an aviary of birds, thus alluding to an inherent connection—the mysteries of nature on earth with the mysteries of the universe as a whole.
Aviary was originally created as a collaborative project between both artists for the 2011 Sitka Center for Art and Ecology Invitational Exhibition in Portland, Oregon.
