The Northern Spotted Owl remains an icon of the fight to preserve ancient forests in the Pacific Northwest. The owl’s 1990 listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act reshaped forest management. Although old-growth logging has slowed, the owl’s populations decreased by 65-85% from 1995 to 2017. Decades of logging old-growth have left this bird vulnerable to newer threats like competition from the aggressive, non-native Barred Owl. Removal of Barred Owls has been shown to help Spotted Owls rebound. But habitat loss from catastrophic wildfires, worsened by climate change and historical forest management practices, compound to push the Northern Spotted Owl spiraling dangerously close to extinction.
Through lane it lay – thro’ bramble –
Through clearing and thro’ wood –
Banditti often passed us
Opon the lonely road.
The wolf came peering curious –
The Owl looked puzzled down –
The serpent’s satin figure
Glid stealthily along,
The tempests touched our garments –
The lightning’s poinards gleamed –
Fierce from the Crag above us
The hungry Vulture screamed –
The Satyr’s fingers beckoned –
The Valley murmured “Come” –
These were the mates –
This was the road
These Children fluttered home.
